Here is a list on non technical interview questions that you may want to consider when interviewing for a position. I recommend thinking about these and answering truthfully, rather than finding an answer you think the interviewer will like.
Just FYI I am not advocating for these questions, I personally think some are fantastic, and some are, well… not.
These are real questions that have *really* been asked.
- What hobbies do you have?
- What can you teach us?
- Tell me about a time you failed and what you learned from it
- the trolley problem
- What are you hoping to learn in this position that will help you in your career path?
- Find something they know how to do well and ask them to teach it to me
- What is your favorite port number and why? (ugh…)
- Tell me about a time where you taught yourself something new and how you applied that skill to your profession.
- You like security?
- What’s the accomplishment you are most proud of at a previous job?
- how do you stay current with new discoveries in your field?
- Tell me a story.
- if you never had to worry about money, what would you do?
- What do you do when you’re not at work?
- What was the last non-fiction book you read?
- What was the last fiction book you read?
- What are you most proud of in your career?
- What are you least proud of in your career and what did you learn from it?
- Other than needing an income, why do you want this job?
- What question should I have asked you, but didn’t?
- Why do you want to work in this company?
- What is your favorite question to ask in a team or project meeting?
- What is the hardest and/or most interesting issue you had to debug?
- Tell me about a tool or service that was dropped in your lap with no training or turnover.
- You walk into a room with a computer display embedded in the wall showing Windows XP. A keyboard and mouse are attached and go into the same wall. How do you figure out what the system does. (Not looking for a technical answer here)
- Explain <insert basic IT concept> to someone who has never used it? (For example: email, a hard drive, the internet, SMS, SnapChat, a web-browser etc.)
- What did you do to prepare for this interview?
- Why did you choose a career in cyber security?
- Why do you want to work for this company/this team?
- How would you approach conflict in your team?
- How do you manage stress?
- Describe a time where you demonstrated your ability to work in a team.
- What personal projects have you worked on?
- How do you stay up to date with cyber security news?
- Give an example of how you used logic to solve a problem?
- How do you stay motivated?
- Give an example of a goal you didn’t meet and how did you handle it?
- What do you do if you disagree with your boss?
